Advantages of cropping

Take a look at the "before" and "after" photo I have taken. I cropped it to create a better focal point on the subject. All the busy foreground was distracting from the dynamics of the shot. Do you agree?

Some people use cropping as a crutch. You should aim to use the entire frame when you take a shot, but it is crucial to know when to use cropping and how to use it.

Photos of the week - 4/5/12

 Happy Thursday 4/5/12

Is there any reason or posting on Thursdays? Not really. It just seemed like a good day to get started.

I have been trying to take photos each week ( I am using my iphone 4s) to give examples of the photographer's  thoughts, trials, and process. Some of the photos will be great but some will be just another person out with a camera trying to caption a moment that they thought would "visualize" their intentions, feelings and sense of life.

Here it goes: The last two weeks I have focused on flowers. It is that time of year and every time I see a patch of someone's  flower garden or border I stop and try to catch a "new point of view" of a common theme. Its like everyone who has taken a sunset photo. We all do it, but once we see it in the viewfinder it may or may not be as majestic or awe inspiring as we thought it was at that moment.

What makes the "moment" happen for us? How do we capture that?

It can be a lot of things: instinct, angle, light, point of view, texture, shapes, contrast, etc, etc.

Any of you photographers reading this, please comment back on your thoughts and struggles to capture the moment and visualize a unique image that is a common sighting.

I am just playing with adding some of my new flower compositions. I think the next one is a better shot. I have not manipulated or cropped these yet. I just wanted to see how they looked on their own. The next one is better I think. Elaine

Somewhat busy but full of little visual gems. The greenery balances out the foreground and the two center flowers vie for attention as focal point. A much better composition with the same feeling of spring. Elaine

Scanned Slide Digitized and Restored

This is a slide from 1978 of my son.

I haven't had time to do much to this picture but I plan to clean it up and sharpen it up using Adobe Photoshop. I'll give step by step use of tools and filters. Hope this helps anyone interested in working on old photos simply.

Trial blog with picture from way back when.

This is a trial blog. I'm not sure how much I have to say but I'm sure I'll think of something soon. Look forward to showing my artwork soon. Elaine

This is a picture of myself and my son in 1982. Wow, I don't look like this now.
